Fordham University was founded in 1841, by the Roman Catholic Diocese of New York, as St. John's College, adopting its current name in 1907, 2 years after the law and medical schools were added. The university’s School of Law has been also highly ranked, being named 30th in the nation in the 2010 U.S. News & World Report law school rankings.
Fordham’s athletic teams are known as the Fordham Rams, who compete in 22 men’s and women’s varsity sports, in NCAA’s Division I Atlantic 10 Conference in all sports except football, in which they compete in the Patriot League of NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision, in which they have been the 2002 Patriot League co-champions, capturing the 2007 Patriot League title outright.
